This house stuff is kinda fun …

Posted in Lecture tour, life in general, magic on June 10, 2008 by magichampion

So I spent another day in the basement cleaning. Spent the afternoon doing errands and the evening on a ladder and the roof. The final trim is on the windows and the roof is being inspected before I decide what to do. I have a choice of replacing the roof tiles or just replacing the missing and broken ones and covering the roof with a new product called Techniseal, which according to the propaganda “is an economical solution which spares the replacement of the roofing material. It stops the deterioration of shingles or membranes by fixing their granules. Good-looking, it can change the colour of the existing roofing in one coat.”.

So any of you heard of this?

I painted the front door in a marine enamel the color “drum beat”. Yes, drum beat is a color. It is the fourth one in the first row for anyone who really wants to click the link. I love that the door will match absolutely nothing else on the house. When I was a kid all doors were either wood or white. Of course I was a kid a looooong time ago!

The stone on the foundation is great and gives the house a real cottage kind of feel I think. It’s hard to believe it’s not really stone. (before the stone)

(after the stone)

Going on the roof was a bit of a challenge. For those of you who don’t know. I fell off the roof about 14 years ago, split open my face and was rushed to the hospital to have a heck of a lot of stitches sewn into my nose! I recall doing a show with black eyes and all these stitches in my nose. I cleverly cut one of those red sponge balls and lightly rubber cemented it to my nose to cover it and not scare the kiddies! Well I was doing OK until some little brat tried to grab the red nose and got my real one too! The blood flowed out the sides as he ripped the ball free of my face and then screamed something about Frankenstein and ran off crying … oh those were the days!

My tour for Scandinavia is going so well I will most likely be extending it a few days. Right now I have dates from September 20th until the 29th but will more than likely stay until October 2nd. It will be my first opportunity to get to spend some real time in the area. In the past I have always just cruised in an out and had short day trips. Sure hope it will be lots of fun.

I am also booking a lecture tour of the North Eastern USA. Apparently I am not as popular there but I hope to be able to book a few and stay a little bit and see some of that area too. I contacted two clubs that both said “no”. I have to be honest I have never, ever had a magic club turn down my lecture. I think I have one of the finest lectures to offer in the world of magic and I always get grand praise once I am finished. I have gone so far as to create a new website strictly to promote my lectures to magic clubs and events. Check it out at: www.magiclecture.com.

Well I have lots more to do and it is already 10:30 at night. Next I have to get in a few hours of work on the shows I am presenting for the IBM / SAM Competition in July. The list of names of the competitors is really impressive. Going to be lots of fun!

Cheers.

Been a fun week …

Posted in Lecture tour, life in general, magic, travel on May 23, 2008 by magichampion

Well I have been quite active this week and creative too. I returned home from Taiwan with a brain full of ideas for card tricks. You see at magic lectures I usually travel with lots of whatever effect I am teaching. Lately these tricks have been larger heavier effects that take up lots of room in my luggage. While sitting at the airport I said to myself I should come up with more card tricks as they pack small! Great reasoning huh!

I have always loved an effect called Bicycle Built for Five by Ton Onosaka of Japan, but dislike the preparation and set up as I can’t keep it straight in my head. Max Maven did a great job with the instructions I just can’t retain the order and handling for some reason. Basically you show five jokers from a deck of Bicycle playing cards, backs and fronts. One joker, the leader, is set aside, face down. As you count trough the cards, one by one, the remaining jokers magically turn face down! Show the faces of the cards. Nothing left but the abandoned bicycles! Where are the missing jokers? Turn over the leader card. There are all five jokers, joined together and look like this:

Here is a video of Ivan Mallia performing the original version:

I liked the idea but wanted to make it super simple and not have all the set up over so many moves so I created this:

I also used the same gimmick cards to create an additional ending to my very popular MatriXpress routine. It really didn’t need anything extra, but I have to admit I love the idea … if I say so myself!

Tonight I have a sold out show to raise funds for the PAC of Hannah’s school. The show is in fact over sold by 24 seats as the administrators of the facility told us there were more seats than there really are … magic! Should be lots of fun as David Wilson, Trevor Watters and Lorena Paradon have all agreed to come help again. Last time we did a show together at the River Rock Casino it was a blast!

Saturday we will be off to Victoria to close the Magic and Mirth show for the Victoria Magic Circle. It will be lots of fun as I get to present a special award to Teresa Midbo as the assistant of the year for SAM #95. This is a super cool award named after my dear friend Lottie Hemeon. Lori and Hannah have both been presented this award in the past.

Sunday I will return home from the Island and for the next week or two it’s all about getting in gear for the IBM/SAM competition … oh and fixing and painting the house, filming the video, yada yada yada …

1st Impressions ….

Posted in Lecture tour, life in general, magic, travel on May 17, 2008 by magichampion

First impressions are so important. You only get one chance to make a first impression. I’ve heard this said so many times and to be honest I was not so sure that first impressions were all that important until this weekend. Let me back up a bit and I’ll explain.

This weekend I was the invited guest of the TMA, Taiwan Magic Association, for their annual magic convention. Several international guests from China, Japan, Germany, the USA and of course Canada were brought together to present a weekend of learning and sharing magic. Over the years I have participated, both as a registrant and as an honored guest, in many of these types of events. They are usually fun events and every once and awhile they are exceptional. If you’ve been reading my blog for awhile you will know that every once and awhile they are not well organized and the guest entertainers are treated less than stellar. Taiwan was fantastic!

I can’t tell you how wonderful it is to exit the luggage area at an airport and actually see a person waiting for you to arrive! I had barely stepped through the frosted doors of the customs hall when I heard my name being shouted. The man shouting was waving his arm and grinning from ear to ear and I was soon to learn this was Leonardo, my host and soon to be new friend in Taiwan.

I had to wrestled him so I could help move my luggage to an awaiting limo and we were off to the convention hotel. I had traveled a little more than 17 hours and was a bit tired to say the least. However upon arrival at the hotel Leonardo suggested we go for something to eat. Always one for a challenge, I said yes and we began a trek around the deserted streets of Sansia Township in search of a restaurant. Did I mention it was after midnight on a Friday? We found a small cafe that served hot pots and I was treated to a truly traditional style Taiwanese meal. When it came time to leave I was not really looking forward to the miles of walking we had done to find the place and was pleasantly surprised to find Leonardo had called and woken a friend to drive over to pick us up and drop me off at the hotel! My first impression of next few days in Taiwan was also that positive. I guess the saying is true.

Over the next few days I did two lectures to standing room only crowds of several hundred eager magicians. Unlike North America where the age of the magician seems to be getting older, in Taiwan I don’t recall seeing many older magicians at all! In fact I would say the average age of the participant would be in their early twenties. These young magicians were excellent students and asked all the right questions. I was also pleasantly surprised to see how many actually spoke English! These kids got my jokes and by the end of the weekend everyone was saying “Easy”. In fact I dropped into the lecture of a friend and when he said the method to his effect was easy the crowd broke out in unison to scream back at him “Easy” which at first threw him off but then seeing me laughing in the back he quickly figured it out and went so far as to point me out in the back of the room.

That evening I was treated to second row center seats for the gala show and I was witness to some of the finest magicians of Asia. The next day came quickly as I didn’t get a lot of sleep. It’s at events like this when I get extra time to just sit and talk to special friends and this evening was lots of fun.

The next morning I slept in and unfortunately missed the close up magic contest. I was sad to have missed this as I love to cheer on competitors as I know exactly how they feel when they are facing an audience who is there to judge them and their magic. In the afternoon I spent my time with the technical staff of the theatre in preparation for the final gala show. There were a whole bunch of technical issues to solve but with the help of their excellent crew, Leonardo’s translation and the generosity of Lu Chen, an Asian magic celebrity, I was able to present the show I wanted to share.

I was in a unique spot in the show. Lu Chen, who would act as Master of Ceremonies for the event started the evening with a very clever dove and manipulation act. He then did a bit of talking to warm the crowd up so more and introduced me. I can’t tell you how great it was to walk on stage to a full theatre of screaming fans! To start I did my presentation of the cups and balls using my new video camera and a huge scree in the center of the stage. The reaction to the ending of the cups was unbelievable. It sounded like air rushing out of a room followed by a deafening round of applause. I next performed my version of the walking knot rope routine to the beautiful voice of Etta James. This too was followed by very loud applause. I closed with my signature routine, Shape of my Heart and although a large percentage of the crowd did not understand a word I had said during the show or what Sting was signing it was well received. OK, it was better than well received. The audience leapt to their feet and cheered, clapped and screamed and it seemed to last forever. I wasn’t quite done so I tried to get them to sit. I then ended my portion of the show by making the deck I had used magically go back to new deck order in a sealed box with the cellophane. The young lady, Mary, who had selected the card was given the deck and she opened it to reveal her card in the correct position inside the sealed box. I barely got to say thank you and good night in Chinese, when the crowd were once again on their feet going crazy with applause. I wish I could have stood on that stage all night … they were such a generous crowd.

Following the show the performers were lead to a signing table where I believe I signed over 300 posters and souvenir books. I could not even begin to guess how photographs were taken but lets just say sunglasses might have been a good idea!

So now that you have heard all the good news, here’s the bad.

First impressions really are important. You see way back in September I submitted an expression of interest for the lease of the Rainbow Theatre in Whistler with the hope of opening my own theatre and being able to be at home and still do what I love. From the moment I began the process I felt I was just spinning my wheels. My first impression was that the folks in charge would never see the whole picture as they have their own vision and focus for Whistler Resort. Well I was right. I lost the bid to have the theatre in favor of the folks who produce the Whistler Film Festival (which will be held December 4th to the 7th). Whistler Film Festival, would like to work with the Whistler Tourism Board to create Canada’s first digital theater. The board has decided to move forward with the digital theater concept as it allows for more flexibility in using the theater for their convention business, and will create the platform to expand into the film industry.   While my concept would certainly enhance the family offering, they feel that the digital theater partnership is better aligned with the long range strategies of the conference center and the resort.

So with those few words I lose a dream …

It’s a tie!

Well I have always said that the friendliest convention in magic is the Pacific Coast Association of Magicians Convention. Not just because I have been running it on and off for the past 15 years, but because it is a super friendly event. I go so far as to ask those that have attended many years to look for the ones who haven’t and to make them feel welcomed.

This weekend here at Hank Lee’s Conclave has been just as friendly an event. I was amazed to see how many people would talk to me even though we have never met. One of my favorite moments was meeting a guy named Cameron Ramsay at the local deli in the hotel. I’m not sure he knew I was one of the headliners or not but I am sure the other magicians in the deli were not in anyway aware I was anything more than just another magician here for the fun. We had a super long chat about magic and what they had done in magic and I then told them a little about myself. It was great.

I hung out in a hallway with some beer drinking magicians until almost 3 AM on the first night, 5 AM on the second and tonight it was early as I had to pack so I got back to the room around 2:30 AM but by the time Lori and I had packed it was past 4 AM and we have to drive at 9 AM to get back to Boston for our first flight of the day!

The day at Hank’s was lots of fun as I had a lecture in the early afternoon and that was immediately followed by the close up sessions. The lecture was just an hour and I have so much to say. Ken, the videographer, told me it was best to do just a 45 minute lecture and save fifteen minutes to sell my tricks and notes as we had to be out of the room in exactly an hour. Well I just couldn’t do it! I have so much to say I raced through the material and talked for the full hour and then ended up selling my stuff in the hallway outside the room! Not a bad move as they emptied both of my suitcases of everything I had brought and I believe the really appreciated me taking as much time as I did to make sure they learned my material regardless of whether they bought something or not.

The close up was also lots of fun. I had only minutes to rush to my room to change into my purple suit, fill my pockets with my effects and race back down to the rooms I would be working. I am really bummed I did not get to see the other acts. I think the next convention I host I will make sure the acts all do their acts for each other at some point in the event. I missed so much great magic but at the same time I got to freak a few people out with my own stuff.

In one of the close up rooms I had a guy named Ozzie who when I revealed the signed card from the sealed deck, turned away to say something kid’s should not hear! Then he looked at me shook his head and mumbled something about the Devil and returned to his seat.

The evening show had some really great acts. I always love watching my friend Chipper Lowell work and tonight was no different! He was so “on” and the crowd loved him. I was buckled over in fits of laughter and after the show he told me several of the jokes he added just for me as he could see I was having so much fun.

It was the first time I had seen Andrew Goldenhersh work. I have seen a short segment of his work on the World Magic Awards TV show but it did not do him justice. On this particular night he could do no wrong! He had the audience in the palm of his hand and he dealt with them brilliantly. I was one of the first to rise to give him a standing ovation. I wasn’t the first though as I had to hide a runaway butterfly under my shirt so I could free up my hands to clap … but that’s another story in itself. I look forward to seeing Andrew work again. I suspect any given night will be just like tonight and I will be in for another treat.

Also on the show was David Sousa, Sonny Fontana, Lyn Dillies, Nick Lewin and David Kaye (aka Silly Billy) who all did outstanding performances as well.

The evening ended by watching “Magic Jeopardy”, meeting old friends, making new ones and sharing stories. A couple of my new friends include Henry and David Evans. Henry is a young magic enthusiast and David is his Father. David also happens to be the conductor for the Broadway show “WICKED”, which happens to be my other new passion. What a small world!

I want to take a second to thank everyone who made me feel so welcome at the Conclave and to everyone who has written me since the Conclave. I especially want to say thanks to Hank Lee for inviting me to be a apart of the 20th annual celebrations. It’s nice to be a part of the history!

Day One of the largest magic convention in the WORLD!

Posted in Lecture tour, magic with tags , , , on February 22, 2008 by magichampion

Well I didn’t get to my vendors booth all day. I had some fun trying to get registered for the convention. Turns out the organizers mailed the package to my house in Canada. Those of you who know me, know my house is not exactly the place I often visit! So without a package I asked the charming ladies of the registration counter to perhaps get me a badge and tickets so I could start enjoying the convention. They were very nice and tried their best to find out anything but after an hour of waiting I went in search of additional help.

I headed over to the VIP desk, but they told me I was just a performer and the other desk would look after me. Back I went to meet Arthur Casson, the convention registration chairman. I told him my name was Shawn Farquhar and that they did not seem to have a package for me. His reply was that the package was mailed and if I didn’t have it then I would most likely be without tickets to the Sunday Gala. He gave me tickets to the Saturday Gala and I told him I wouldn’t need those as it was my understanding I was on the Saturday evening show. His reply, “oh you’re performing here?”. I have never felt so much love. Now with badge in hand I headed off to the hotel to take a nap as the event up to now had been quite stressful and I had just a few hours before I had to lecture.

I was an hour into my “jet lag” induced nap when the front desk called my room to tell me I was late for my “stage act rehearsal” in the Opera House. I am never late for a rehearsal and besides he show isn’t until tomorrow night so why would they need to rehearse today? Turns out I was late for a rehearsal. I was later to find out someone just left a note on the chair of my vendors booth earlier in the day with a schedule of rehearsals …
opera-house-smaller.jpg
The rehearsal was quick and to the point and the crew of the theatre and club members backstage were outstanding. I was less than totally coherent during the run through as I was still half asleep. I did however get the understanding that the Saturday Gala was billed as a competition of the UK vs the World. What an odd idea for a gala. If I had known it was going to be billed as a competition I would not have agreed to perform.

Now with that out of the way I headed back to the fabulous Gresham Hotel to prepare for my evening lecture. I was even more thrilled to hear my event was up against the British Close Up Championship. This I felt meant I would have a very small audience and not much exposure for my magic.
101625031.jpg
I was so wrong… My lecture was standing room only with people out in the hall ways looking in to see what all the fuss was about. I was only given an hour to lecture and the traditional 30 minutes to sell following. I had a great group of tech working for me and the video projector they set up made the lecture perfect. I always travel with my own projector and camera but having professional working their own made it “Easy”. My lecture last 1 hour and one minute and they really seemed to like the stuff. I wish I could have done everything and explained things better but I just didn’t have enough time. I think the organizers should seriously consider extending lecture to 90 minutes to allow for better explanations and more material to be covered. As I said my thanks and left the stage the table where Lori and Simon were standing was mobbed and my effects were being snatched up very fast. I tried to make my way to the crowd and got stuck signing autographs and taking photo’s. I love this part of my job. That people like my magic is the true mark of my success. I would love to have basked in the moment but 10 minutes into it the security guard started shouting that everyone had to leave now. Within 13 minutes of finishing my lecture everyone was out of the hall and I was even in the hallway with out my lecture material. I explained I needed to get back in to get my stuff and the security guard was annoyed as he was in a hurry to be done. What a glorious way to end my first day at the Blackpool Convention.

Another persons opinon of my lecture can be found at this blog by Naquada. Don’t be thrown off that he begins by calling me Steve. Calling me names other than Shawn became a theme of this convention ….

February 8, 2008 Malaga

Posted in Lecture tour, magic, travel on February 8, 2008 by magichampion

Our day started as most by crawling out of bed, getting in the van and driving. We did make one stop to find a bank which should have taken five minutes but lasted about an hour! Once we were on the road it was a short trip to Malaga. For the firt time ever we found our designated hotel instantly. On the other hand, they didn’t know we were coming. I tried to contact our local contact but his phone was not in service. I called the secondary contact who didn’t seem to know who I was! He asked to speak to the desk clerk and when the conversation was done I was told to wait in the lobby as the “Paco” fellow had told the clerk he would call back in five minutes. Well after waiting in the lobby for an hour I had enough and booked my own room so I could put my luggage somewhere.

David and I ventured into the big touristy city of Malaga and went shopping where I saw some pretty cool stuff. I am a bit of a nut when it comes to watches, I own quite a few, and saw some really nice ones. David saw the perfect T-shirt for his son Andrew and I eventually ended up heading back to the hotel to get ready for the lecture.

It was now an hour from the lecture time and no one had called so I tried calling the Paco fellow but now his phone didn’t answer. I tired the original contact number and was told he didn”t even know I was even in Spain! Somewhere in all of this I figured out I had a “night off”. It wasn’t really how I wanted the tour to end but it was OK with me. I was “fine”.

We headed out again to have a dinner. We found a place that served steaks and the menu was in English! It was a great steak and a fun night. This was definitely a tourist area as the meal for the two of us was about 120€ and we were still hungry! To end our time in Spain we took a short walk around the area and ended up having a soft ice cream cone from Burger King. OK stop laughing … it was the perfect ending … in the morning we are off to London and we will have one night to see a show … hmmm my guess .. Wicked!

February 7, 2008 Granada

Well it was a fun day. We had started out late from the Monastery on a quest to find food. We found a rather touristy area and were super happy to find a Doner-Kebab house. I normally dislike eating at outside tables unless it is super hot. Today was super hot and sitting outside was excellent. We sat and watched people and even saw what appeared to be a headless man! We then ventured further into the city and looked at all the windows of closed shops. Yup, everyone closes up for Siesta. This is such an old idea and I was really surprised to see it is even in the big cities. I am really surprised the economy is not affected … but hey I’m from Canada.

The lecture for the evening was at the Monastery so it was just a short walk to the lecture hall. There was a great group of magicians including a World Champion of Magic, MagoMigue (Miguel Puga). I am a fan of his magic and we had a great evening hanging out after the lecture and of course had Doner-Kebabs and beers. The evening was lots of fun and we called it a night after making our way to a nightclub that was actually closed …. bummer because it looked really cool. Well tomorrow we are off to do our final lecture in Malaga…

February 6, 2008 travel day …

Posted in Lecture tour, magic, travel on February 6, 2008 by magichampion

Yesterday was another day off and a four hour drive to Granada for the next lecture. Before leaving Madrid we took a couple of detours including a visit to my friend Christian’s magic shop. We had a nice visit and I found a deck of Bicycle Poker 808 in Orange. I am an avid collector of playing cards and have quite a large collection of normal and rare cards. Many of them are custom decks of magicians but I think the center piece of my collection would have to be the unopened deck of playing cards from Air Force One, the US Presidents private plane. Rumor has it the Joker has a picture of Bush …

We had a basically uneventful day full of driving and singing tunes from “Wicked”. Our arrival in Granada was quite late and we quickly checked into the hotel. Well it wasn’t really a hotel, it was a converted Monastery. We rushed off to have dinner and although the food was good the service sucked. Oh they were attentive and everything … they just liked hitting my shoulder every time they passed. I moved several times to avoid the next hit and finally just got up and walked out before I had a severe “angry eyes” moment!

It was the first night of the tour where we didn’t go drinking as I crawled into bed early and tried to catch up on some much needed sleep.
In the morning we plan to check out the city and play tourists.

February 5, 2008 Madrid

With two days of rest under my belt we were ready for our next lecture.  This was in Madrid so we didn’t have to do much driving.  It was just five minutes from hotel to hotel.  The exciting part was when I realized I had lost my wallet!  A quick drive back to the first hotel and a valiant attempt to explain to the counter host in my “Spanglish” that I needed to get into my old room resulted in me finding the wallet in the middle of the driveway!

Back and settled into the new hotel we decided to venture into Madrid to see some more sights.  We saw lots of squares and more statutes. In the evening I lectured at the SEI club with about 55 members in attendance.  I was very honored to have many special guests in attendance.   A dear old friend, Christian Miro, who I have known for years from Norwegian Cruise Line was in the audience and Rafael Benatar was kind enough to translate for the whole evening.  To look out and see familiar faces smiling back at me was special.

Unlike most locations I did the lecture straight through without an intermission.  I did this to try to have some extra time with my friends following the presentation.

We all went to a special restaurant and I had a huge steak!  Most of the folks in attendance though groaned when I asked for Ketchup for my “patatas fritas” (french fries)… who eats french fries without ketchup?

The evening ended with Rafael Benatar trying to get us home when we had no idea the name of the hotel or the location.  His GPS could not find a  satellite.  It then dawned on me that I had packed our little “Gypsy”, GPS in the lecture bag.  We pulled over on the side of the road and in minutes we were back in business and on our way to the hotel.

February 4, 2008 Madrid Running off to the Circus!

Posted in Lecture tour, magic, travel on February 4, 2008 by magichampion

Sleeping in is a good thing.  Our day was totally unplanned and began with lunch at an Italian restaurant.  The coolest part was the menu was in English!  Oh and the fact the restaurant was open at 2 in the afternoon was quite refreshing.  Most places seem to be closed for Siesta and it’s hard to fins a late lunch place.

Having no idea where and what to see we decided to take an open top double decker bus tour.  Only thing was it began to rain and the idea of paying to get wet was not high on my list of thing to do.  Being quite inventive we decided to follow the bus and stay dry in our own van.  Each time we approached something that looked important we asked “Gypsy” our GSP to tell us about “points of interest”  in the area.  Using this basic theory we saw the Palace Real, Bank of Espana and way too many fountains and squares.

Next stop was to find a shop to buy a bottle of Rum and some mix.  Turns out they don’t have many place that sell booze!  Good news was we saw a Circus and when we went to the gates we found out we only had minutes to wait before the curtain went up. We rushed to buy VIP tickets and headed into Plaza de Toros (the bull fighting ring) where the big top had been erected.

I have always loved Circus and dreamed as a child to run away and join one.  This was as close as I could feel.  I was a foot from the Ringmaster, could smell the sweat from the acrobats and the elephant dung!  With a huge glass of Rum and Coke in hand I sat though the Circus with a feeling I can not easily describe.  I even almost saw a man shot from a cannon!  (Long story … but funny)

Following the Circus we headed to find more food and drinks and ended up in a nightclub district called Sol.  We went to several clubs including a pirate themed bar and one devoted to Mona Lisa.

A really fun thing happened while walking down a street in the club area.  I was trying to impress a couple of pretty ladies by vomiting some cards from my mouth when a man rushed across the street and very excitedly tried to explain he had seen me on the Norwegian Jewel in the Summer when I was sailing from Barcelona.  We took a photo together and I signed an autograph and headed off the see if we could crash a private party for Spain’s Motion Picture industry. That didn’t work out so we called it a night and caught a taxi back to the hotel.

It was a perfect evening, followed by a perfect dinner, followed by the most peaceful nights sleeps I have ever had…What a great evening … I will remember it forever …
